UNIFIED UI ACROSS SUITE

THE CHALLENGE

Lost in the Grid

Comments in Spreadsheets have a unique problem: they are hidden inside millions of cells. Through usability studies and survey analysis, I found that users were struggling to locate feedback, navigate between threads, and distinguish between active and resolved issues.

What started as a Sheets-specific investigation uncovered a larger need for a unified way to manage "For You" items versus general discussion.

THE EVOLUTION
  • 01

    SHEETS: TAB INDICATORS

We created a visual affordance on the bottom sheet tabs, showing users exactly how many comments existed on each page to prevent missed feedback.

  • 02

    SHEETS: NAV CARD

Introduced a floating navigation card allowing users to "step through" comments linearly without hunting through the grid.

  • 03

    GLOBAL: THE SIDEBAR

The final evolution: A unified sidebar with "All Comments" and "For You" tabs, plus robust filtering (Resolved vs. Open). Now the standard across the suite.

RESEARCH METHODS

DISCOVERY

Analyzed survey feedback to categorize the top pain points: Finding comments, Navigating threads, and Filtering categories.

USABILITY LABS

Conducted observational studies to watch users fail to find specific comments in large spreadsheets, validating the need for a "List View."

STANDARDIZATION

Validated the Sidebar pattern across Docs and Slides to prove that a unified feedback model reduced cognitive load for suite users.
